Animal Farm
Committee Description
Animal Farm is a dystopian novel by George Orwell that is a satirical commentary on historical revolutions and the path to totalitarianism. A farmer named Mr. Jones was losing his grip on his farm while the animals developed dreams of liberation from humans’ greed and control. This combination of events led to the conflict of how the animals could create a new social order where they may live freely without humans. It is up to delegates to decide how they will run their new society while managing the challenges of sustaining their resources, equality amongst each other, and their freedom.
Topic A – Creating a New Society
The manor farm is on the brink of revolution. Animals are growing tired of the resources they work tirelessly for being stolen by humans, as well as the hopeless certainty of being slaughtered. However, after a speech that the wise pig, Old Major gives, dreams and hope for a new just society are ignited. At this point, it is up to the animals of this farm to decide the ideals, leaders and commandments that will dictate the order of their dreamed new society. This topic must cover the issue of how animals will sustain themselves in terms of food, labour, and leadership. Delegates must develop a realistic system that all animals can agree on to ensure the safety and sustainability of the farm without humans. This must be done while trying to avoid a system that perpetuates the greed and behaviours they experienced from humans.
Topic B – Regulating a Developing Society
Within a new society comes the challenge of distributing power and representing all parties efficiently and agreeably. One of the main issues with Animal Farm is its principles and innate caution around humans, this includes animals that behave like humans. This causes the need to identify the boundary between what technology and regulations can be developed to serve their society, while also remaining just and fair amongst each other. Whilst ensuring they meet their society’s moral standards, animals must decide how they will ensure that their society is ethical and advocates for all animals to avoid the path towards chaos.
